The Five Stans Adventure exploring Turkmenistan 🇹🇲 Uzbekistan 🇺🇿 Tajikistan 🇹🇯 Kazakhstan 🇰🇿 and Kyrgyzstan 🇰🇬
This morning, we’ll drive to Saty Village with a stop along the way at the spectacular Charyn Canyon. The richly coloured orange canyon etched into the surrounding landscape is no less impressive than the Grand Canyon in the US (though much smaller). Enjoy some time here to marvel at this natural wonder and grab some photos before we continue to Saty Village.
~ Intrepid Travel ~ Five Stans Day 18
This is my definition of a perfect day!
Charyn Canyon
Also called the Valley of Castles, Charyn Canyon was formed with sedimentary rocks more than 12 million years ago.

The views from the top of the canyon were amazing ~ similar to looking out over the Grand Canyon. There are stairs to get down to the canyon floor and it’s a descending 2 kilometre walk to get to the Charyn River where there is a nice picnic area. Thankfully there are old soviet vans available to drive you back to the staircase!
Hike to Kolsai Lakes
Kolsay Lakes National Park is called the “Pearls of Tien Shan” and located on the north slope of the Tian Shan Mountains. Kolsai Lakes consist of 3 lakes.

Saty Village & Homestay
Saty is located in Kolsai Kolderi National Park between the Zailiysky Alatau and Kungei-Alatau mountain ranges and we had our homestay here.
